Oils for Candle Magic: Money Oil Recipe, Cleansing Oil and Tips

One of my favorite forms of magic is candle magic. There’s much more to candle magic than simply lighting a candle and saying a prayer. For those who want to take it to the next level, try making your own oils for candle magic. These oils are easy and cheap to make and amplify your candle spells three-fold!

First, What Are Oils for Candle Magic?

Oils for candle magic are herb-infused oils used to “dress” candles for spells. To dress a candle means to roll or rub the oil over the candle to increase the desired effect. This is a popular method in various folk magic and witchcraft traditions.

DIY Candle Dressing Oils: What You’ll Need

It’s super easy and cheap to make your own oils for andle magic. In fact, you probably already have ALL of the ingredients right in your kitchen! The first thing you need is a base oil. This could be olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, sunflower oil, or if you’re really in a pinch vegetable or corn oil. Next, you’ll need DRIED herbs and spices to infuse into the oil. Some common spices in your kitchen cabinet for candle oils include: cinnamon, rosemary, thyme, pepper, cayenne, parsley, oregano, etc. You’ll also need a glass jar with an air-tight lid and, if you want your oils to last longer, some vitamin E oil to preserve.

DIY Cleansing Oil for Candle Magic and MORE

Cleansing oils are important for candle magic to remove negativity from a household or from an individual. You’ll follow the same routine as the money oil recipe above, but the ingredients should be different. If you substitute for the ingredients, choose herbs with purification, exorcism, or banishing properties.

What You’ll Need:

  • glass jar with air-tight lid
  • olive oil (or any other carrier oil you have on-hand)
  • dried rosemary
  • dried culinary sage
  • dried rue (test a bit against your skin to see if you’re allergic – rue makes some people break out. If you are allergic to rue, wear gloves when handling OR substitute with a different herb)
  • vitamin E oil (to preserve)

How to Make the Cleansing Oil Recipe for Candle Magic:

  1. Fill the air-tight jar with equal parts rosemary, sage and rue halfway to the top.
  2. Pour olive oil over the herbs until the jar is almost filled to the top with oil.
  3. Add a few drops of vitamin E oil (a preservative).
  4. Close the jar and shake it gently.
  5. Put it in a dark, cool, dry place.
  6. Every day for two weeks shake the jar.
  7. After two weeks, strain the herbs and powders out of the oil.
  8. Bottle/jar it back up and label it “Cleansing Oil”.
  9. Anoint candles, thresholds and windows, your car, etc. to cleanse of negativity.

Using Oils for Candle Magic: A Few Tips

There’s different ways to dress your candles with your DIY oils for spells and rituals. But here’s a tip no one told me until much later in my craft: if you’re anointing a candle to rid yourself of something (i.e. cleansing, banishing, etc.) rub the oil from top to bottom or away from you. If you’re drawing something towards you (i.e. money, love, etc.), rub the oil from bottom to top towards you.
