10 FREE Witchcraft Practices For Those on a Budget

Whether you are struggling financially or just want to save some money, there are ways to practice witchcraft for FREE. People come to the craft and think they should buy all these sparkly tools and supplies, but that’s absolutely not true. I grew up in the craft as a teen using only items from nature and things I could already find in my house. And you can too! Here’s our 20 ways to practice witchcraft for FREE.

Ways to Practice FREE Witchcraft

There are so many ways to practice your craft that don’t require you to spend your last earned dollar. I’m sure you’ll be able to come up with a few on your own, but here’s some recommendations:

1. Foraging for Magical Supplies

Feel like a total ancient bad-ass forager and find your magical herbs, tools, and supplies outside! Learn what native plants are in your area. Harvest only what you need. But common natural items like acorns, pinecones, branches, stones, and seed pods are all FREE witchcraft tools!

2. Divination With Nature

Instead of buying an expensive collection of tarot cards, divination can be done outside for free. Learn and practice reading the clouds’ patterns, patterns in sand or rock, or even omens and signs brought by wildlife. Bird augury is one of my favorites and costs literally nothing!

3. Earthing and Grounding

Two easy and essential witchcraft practices that are also FREE are earthing and grounding. Earthing is simply walking outside barefoot and allowing your energy to meld with Mother Earth’s. Grounding is a simple meditation in which you visualize your root chakra flowing down into the earth and connecting with the earth in a beautiful, balancing way. Learn more about these practices here.

4. Connect With Land Spirits

One way to connect with the land where you live is to make a genius loci profile. This is where you mark off a page in your grimoire specifically to note the wildlife in your area, including animals, insects, plants, trees, and bodies of water. Once you are able to identify your genius loci, you’ll find yourself connected to the spirits of the land. FOR FREE.

5. Pray and Invoke

Praying to the Universe, your ancestors, or your gods costs literally nothing and can be done anywhere at any time. Invoking, as well. Plus it builds a relationship with our deities and makes us feel better!

6. Makeshift Altars and Biodegradable Offerings

This is a free witchcraft practice that’s also helpful for those who can’t have an altar at home – makeshift natural altars. Have a nearby forest you can escape to? Or even a large yard? Make an altar for your gods or familiars using the top of a stump, large rock, etc. Add biodegradable tools and offerings made of sticks, stones, leaves, feathers, flowers, and more! The thought and effort you put into this is just as appreciated by the gods as a fancy offering bought from a store!

7. Free Books

You don’t have to spend a ton of money on witchy and magical books. Borrow from the library or from a friend. If your library doesn’t have witchcraft books, check out other books that will be helpful to your craft including books on: mythology, folklore, gardening, herbalism, crystals, alternative healing modalities, etc. Also check out sacredtexts.org, where you can view hundreds of occult books for free!

8. Meditation

Meditation is helpful for everyone to learn to relax, release, and re-connect. It’s also FREE. You can listen to guided meditations for free on YouTube or Spotify. Or simply go outside and watch the trees blowing in the wind. That’s meditation enough, trust me.

9. Magical Household Tools

Use what you have on-hand. Don’t buy a ton of magical tools if you don’t have the budget. The items you have in your house are free to you now, so use them! For example, your tea kettle makes magical tea. The tea itself has herbs and plant material, all of which have magical properties. Need something to use as an offering bowl? A bowl from your kitchen!

10. Dream Journaling

Our dreams aren’t just jumbled up thoughts and pictures from the day. They are a mirror of our souls, a portal to other worlds and a channel of communication between us and the gods/ancestors. Dreams are free! Record them in a plain notebook or journal (whatever you have). Review and analyze them to gain insight.

What I love about this site is that you emphasize the fact that this should be easy, inexpensive, and from the heart. It’s not what you own that matters – in fact, that may hold you back. It’s your intentions. And getting in touch with nature is perhaps the most powerful thing that anyone can do. Thank you for always offering practical and sensible advice.

This is a beautiful article and one that resonates strongly with me. My practices have always been a natural inclination and not taught or researched. I’ve actually only just recently started really studying and researching but my practice has been all my life without even realizing. I keep a dream journal which over time has contributed towards strong predictive dreams. I am also obsessed with animals and nature and surround myself with tons of animals. I have bunnies, cats, dogs, goats, zebra & cows and we have a ton of rodents, birds and reptiles where I live. I make an effort to connect with them and have had many crazy predictions come from their behavior. I really dont need Tarot Cards. My animal friends always tell me whats going to happen. It sounds strange but my friends can tell you sooo many stories about this strange ability. The animals just always come to me and show me.

Anybody have any links to articles that will help witches in the broom closet? I have seen some tips, but most of them seem obvious. These were some great tips that are free and as an extra perk, these aren’t obvious witchcraft

I’ve always practiced this way.🖤!!!! Sooo glad it’s finally been said out loud. I am a Virgo, Earth sign💚 My house and property are filled with rocks, sand, branches, seashells, pine cones and feathers from places I’ve traveled to and found. I’ve never been able to deal with store bought tarot cards. I’ve always believed in signs from the universe and nature to help guide me. Thank you so much for saying this!!! Blessings 🌸

These are great ideas and very helpful. I’m “new” to this and find the information that is out there a bit overwhelming so this feels good and tangible/doable !
